SUCCESS CLIENT FOR 2009

Company Name: Aztec Machine & Repair

Owner: Tim Montoya

Type of Business: Industrial equipment manufacturer

Years in Business: 12

Number of Employees: 38

Flash back to 1997. The corporate office decides to close down your office. What do you do?

Tim Montoya transformed it into an opportunity.

Months before, Tim & his wife, Marcy, purchased a defunct machine shop that had been closed for over 15 years, along with its antique equipment. Unable to find a new job, Aztec Machine & Repair came into being. Known at that time as After Hours Machine, the fledgling company started with two employees. Today, this proactive business covers four states, has 38 employees, an annual payroll exceeding $1.6 million, a full Board of Directors and recently moved into a new energy efficient 12,000 square foot facility sitting on 12 acres. Aztec Machine & Repair and its sister company, Cranes & Material Handling, are role models for future entrepreneurs.

Machine shops are common but, under Tim’s direction, the combination of these two companies, Aztec Machine & Repair and Cranes & Material Handling, has proven to be a symbiotic one. Unlike others, this is not an oil field dependent business, but rather primarily serves power plants, railroads, mines, and government facilities. It is positioned to remain strong in virtually all environments utilizing lean manufacturing techniques and encouraging increased productivity by caring for its employees with the use of natural light, skylights, in-floor heating and ample air conditioning resulting in a pleasant work environment.

Tim’s involvement with the SBDC at San Juan College began in 1998 when he needed a business plan as part of a successful expansion financing package. Since that time, the SBDC has worked with Tim on multiple business plans, encouraged him through several loan awards, assisted his personnel with back-office issues such as payroll and taxes, coached him on his NxLevel journey and proudly watched his company expand. When asked, Tim says that the most valuable assistance he received from the Farmington SBDC was knowledgeable information on running the business side of his company. Always having his expectations met, Tim refers fellow entrepreneurs to the Farmington SBDC particularly when they are struggling with management issues, HR, inventory control and planning deficiencies.

Today, this savvy businessman serves on the Farmington SBDC Advisory Council, is a past Success Client (2004), a recipient of the San Juan Economic Development Service 2007 EDGE Award and a PNM Entrepreneurial Leadership Award nominee.
