GALLUP SBDC 's 2009 CLIENT OF THE YEAR

Walking into Sammy C’s Rockin’ Sports Pub & Grille, you’re surrounded with sports and music memorabilia covering the walls and filling rows of display cases. These fascinating objects provide a major component of the crowd-pleasing atmosphere that attracts people from far and wide to this bustling restaurant and sports bar. Sammy Chioda, well known as a radio personality in Gallup and Las Cruces, collected the mementos over his four decades in radio. During that time, he spent 25 years as a play-by-play sports broadcaster.
Mr. Chioda and his wife Marie manage Sammy C’s together. In recent months they have added a breakfast and lunch menu, and they provide 50 jobs to the local economy. Sammy C’s has a feature unique in the area: a Starbucks coffee shop located within the restaurant. The Chiodas are proud to have negotiated the acquisition of this upscale franchise.
The Chiodas have been getting help from the UNM-Gallup Small Business Development Center since before they opened the restaurant. How do the Chiodas characterize the assistance they receive from the SBDC? Ms. Chioda calls it “highly fabulous. They are always here for us.” A key part of their business plan was to receive an SBA loan for expansion. “The SBDC staff kept plugging away with us until it was done,” says Ms. Chioda, “getting us past all the hurtles and glitches. I am very impressed with how they helped us work out detailed financial projections. Once the application was done, the loan was approved in record time.” Sammy and Marie Chioda are now planning to build a new reception hall in the bottom level of Rockin’ Sammy C’s.
The Chiodas strongly recommend that “any start-up business should see the Gallup SBDC. They’ll make all the difference for you.”
