2008 New Mexico Junior College - Small Business Development Center Star Client
The Third Day, LLC: Mitchell Baxter
Five years ago Mitchell formed an LLC with his parents and purchased an existing business. Through Mitchell’s hard work during the past five years, the sales space of the original business has been expanded to four times the original size and the sales volume has tripled from the first year’s sales. This increase has also created five new jobs with the total work force now numbering eight employees. The original product lines included trees, shrubs, bedding plants, and lawn and garden chemicals. During the past five years, new product lines that have been introduced have included organic fertilizers, ponds and pond care products, Christmas ornaments and live Christmas trees, garden flags, outdoor bistro furniture sets, outdoor décor, wind chimes, bath and body supplies, candles, and faith oriented decorations.
One of the unexpected discoveries during the past five years of operation has been the amount of physical labor involved in operating the business. Another pleasant surprise has been how well the sale of wind chimes has been. This was the first new product line selected by Mitchell. A high end product was chosen and the sales volume has exceeded all expectations. The vendor who supplies the garden flags sold by The Third Day indicated to Mitchell that his business has the highest sales volume of any company in the territory which includes Albuquerque and other market areas much larger than Hobbs.
Brandon Hunt was the business specialist at the SBDC at New Mexico Junior College who assisted with the startup of The Third Day. Mitchell mentioned that the quality business plan developed with the assistance of the SBDC at New Mexico Junior College assured the acquisition of the business loan utilized to purchase the business. The SBDC was praised by this client for assisting with the completion of the loan application. Mitchell’s mother who is an accountant and used to volumes of paperwork, said the application process was certainly simplified with the assistance given by Mr. Hunt. The assistance with the creation of the company logo was another service provided by the SBDC that was deemed especially helpful.
Mitchell’s plans include continued growth and expansion during the next several years. He has a very optimistic outlook for the economic growth in Lea County and is excited about the future in this booming part of New Mexico.
