2011 Hobbs - Small Business Development Center Star Client
Marker Services, LLC: Robert and Ginger Tice
Marker Services LLC was established in 1968 as Marker Sheet Metal by Dick and Dixie Marker in Hobbs, New Mexico. It was a full service heating, air-conditioning, and sheet metal contractor specializing in the installation service, maintenance and upgrading of residential, commercial, and industrial heating/cooling equipment as well as a complete custom sheet metal fabrication facility. Marker Sheet Metal was then purchased in 1996 by Buddy and Margie Foreman to expand their existing business, Buddy’s Air-Conditioning and Heating. The Foreman’s named the combined companies into Marker Services Inc. The business has a solid foundation with a proven 43 year history of profitability and maintains a customer base of over 2000 commercial and residential accounts.
Since 2003, Robert Tice was employed by Marker Services, Inc. performing service and equipment repair as he has been in the industry for over 30 years. When approached by the owner in 2011, Robert jumped at the opportunity to make the leap from employee to business owner through a business acquisition. Mr. Tice along with his wife Ginger contacted the New Mexico Junior College – Small Business Development Center to provide assistance in the research, review, and financial plan development for the business acquisition. NMJC-SBDC staff worked with Robert and Ginger to review the financial history, tax information, and considerations for a business acquisition. The end result of the work being a strong business plan with financial forecast that supported the business as a strong financial business investment. Given current economic conditions, Robert and Ginger were able to successfully acquire the business through an owner finance and personal equity contribution creating the new Marker Services, LLC. The business acquisition allowed for the creation of three full-time jobs and the retention of six full-time positions.
Robert and Ginger had this to say about their experience with the center, “Upon contacting the NMJC - Small Business Development Center, Brandon was able to point us in the right direction as becoming a new business owner and where to begin. Rob and I had never experienced owning our own business and were clueless on where or how to proceed. Brandon challenged us to examine all aspects of a business acquisition and played a key role in helping us prepare our business plan and financial projections. Having an establishment like the NMJC-SBDC to turn to definitely simplified the process for us and built our confidence along the way!”
Our services include business counseling from experts on financing, marketing and business planning. We also offer workshops designed to help small business owners succeed. Our office staff is bilingual and can offer all services in Spanish.
The RESOURCE CENTER has a broad selection of resource materials on managing and growing a small business. This includes a selection of Entrepreneur Guides, periodicals, magazines, videos, DVDs and books on expanding or starting a business. These resources can be checked out and reviewed by SBDC clients in their own home.
