PREMIER SIGNS & GRAPHICS, LAS VEGAS, NEW MEXICO
When Tommy and Theresa Archuleta decided to start a signs and graphic business, both had full-time jobs, so they recruited their children, in particular their eldest son, Aaron, to help with it. In October of 2008 Premier Signs and Graphics opened its doors. Aaron Archuleta, having taken classes in graphics, design and technology, quickly picked up on the work and soon became full time. Tommy Archuleta said, "Aaron has really been the heart of the business, running it at such a young age." Aaron has created logos for t-shirts, posters and invitations, and his designs have been featured in major publications and events such as Motorcycle Events magazine and the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Car Show.
The potential for expansion soon became obvious. The Archuletas set their hearts on a downtown location with more equipment and more room to grow. The family contacted the Luna Community College Small Business Development Center, and Theresa Archuleta attended SBDC workshops in taxes and record keeping. Center staff helped the family develop their business plan and guided them through the loan process to secure financing.
Premier Signs and Graphics were approved for funding through Community 1st Bank, and they moved into their new location on 520 6th St in February of 2010. “The SBDC has been great”, said Aaron Archuleta. “We would recommend anyone already in business or thinking about it to take advantage of their services." " I know we'll continue to use them for help with marketing and further growth,” said Tommy Archuleta. “The trainings they provide are great and very affordable,” Theresa Archuleta said. “The relationship that comes from working with the SBDC is so valuable in bringing confidence to the table.”
Premier Signs and Graphics has been very supportive of the community by donating to local sports programs, Mecha, and Future Farmers of America. This business strategy has worked well; in Tommy Archuleta's words, “We really want to get people to shop locally, and we'll match any Internet or out-of-town pricing to make that happen. They have since quadrupled their sales and the family is already thinking of purchasing a building to expand even more.
Luna Community College SBDC Business Specialist, Melissa Gold said, "The Archuleta’s family-oriented business style and their customer-first policy and attention to detail have helped them grow a loyal customer base and referral network. Their possibilities are endless."
