Goats Plus Bees Equals Success!

Milk and Honey has always let Mother Nature guide the way in producing the raw ingredients for their handmade artisan soaps and lotion bars. Founded in 2005 at the Santa Fe Farmers Market, the main ingredients (and namesakes of the business) came from owner Daven Lee’s farm in Santa Fe: creamy goat milk from her goats and nutritive honey and beeswax from her bees; with additional ingredients sourced from Northern New Mexico agricultural businesses. Milk and Honey distinguishes itself further by producing custom artisan soaps and lotion bars with molds designed by local sculptors, inspired by our New Mexico landscape, and farm and family life.

Today, Milk and Honey is a triple bottom line (people, planet, profit) business creating handmade, artisan-designed bodycare products made with locally-sourced, all-natural farm ingredients and marketed using savvy, brand-forward strategies consistent with their values. While still based at the Santa Fe Farmers Market, M&H now markets its artisan products through its website, MilkandHoneySoap.com, and in stores nationwide with its line of products packaged in colorful, eco-friendly boxes that tell the inviting story of Milk and Honey and create a strong brand shelf-presence. Last year, the company was awarded a USDA Value Added Producer Grant, to create a Strategic Growth Plan and Marketing Strategy, with which it hopes to attract investment capital and that provides a path for continued, sustainable and exciting growth.

The SBDC at the Santa Fe Community College provided business assistance at two crucial junctures in Milk and Honey’s growth: the composition of its original business plan, which resulted in its first business loan; and the development of financial statements and projections. In addition, Daven says, “The advisors at SBDC are always tracking Milk and Honey, offering ideas for raising capital, networking, and just providing continued support and availability. For a business whose core value is “local,” this relationship has been especially satisfying. I especially want to thank Mike Mykris for his support.”

Milk and Honey’s Nanny Goat Milk Soaps and Honeybee Lotion Bars are now sold in Whole Foods Markets across NM. Total sales have doubled since 2009, they are poised for growth, while still maintaining their mission:

". . . our love of goats and Mother Nature, an appreciation for things natural, handmade, sensual and beautiful; and the passion to create a meaningful life that will inspire others to do the same."
