Eldorado Animal Clinic
|
In Eldorado, a semi-rural community outside of Santa Fe, Dr. T. Murt Byrne, DVM is affectionately known as Dr. Murt. He decided to go into veterinary medicine when he was a child in Ohio: “When the family spaniel died from distemper, I remember the feelings of frustration and helplessness. I felt that there must be something I could do. Veterinary medicine allowed me to combine my love of animals with my love of science." He first sought the aid of the Santa Fe SBDC in 1991 to plan the establishment of his practice, The Eldorado Animal Clinic. He opened his business in 1993, with himself and a receptionist as the only employees. Today, he says with some surprise, “Eldorado is one of the largest veterinary hospitals in the state.”
Dr. Murt recalls, “The SBDC staff spent many hours with me from the start, especially in the areas of cash flow and market research. They were invaluable in the process of getting the financing I needed.” When he received a business loan in the amount of $300,000, he started operations. Today the Eldorado Animal Clinic inhabits a 7,000 square foot building with five examination rooms, expanded surgical and diagnostic facilities, and a boarding kennel. Its team of veterinarians works with companion animals, horses and alpacas. The clinic offers many services in addition to veterinary exams and vaccinations. Diagnostics, including blood analysis, EKG, radiology, endoscopy, and ultrasound are in daily use. The surgical suite, flooded with natural light and augmented by surgical spotlights, hosts two surgical stations with hydraulic tables, ample storage for surgical instruments and sufficient space for multiple surgeons and assistants.
In recent months Dr. Murt has been working with the SBDC staff in a new plan to grow his client base through focused marketing efforts. The number of employees has increased from two to over twenty, and Dr. Murt says that the employees “have good jobs and real career tracks for the future. The clinic has a family feeling. Although we have grown tremendously, we strive to maintain the same small-town attitude and personal service we had when we started.”
